Gratitude as a Leader: A Path to Stronger, More Connected Leadership

4th November 2024 by Sandra Pollock Leave a Comment

November is National Gratitude Month – a perfect opportunity to reflect on how practising gratitude can make us better leaders, build stronger teams, and help us stay grounded through our challenges.

Gratitude is one of my favourite topics, and something that I practise daily. I find that it gives me balance, a sense of appreciation and thankfulness for the good things that happen. Gratitude isn’t expecting something in return for being thankful. It’s a genuine feeling of appreciation without the anticipation of a reward.  It’s a mindset that allows us to recognise and value positive experiences, relationships, and even challenges that contribute to our growth.

This practice can lead to greater well-being, improved relationships, and a sense of fulfilment.

As leaders, we’re accustomed to focusing on results. But the journey to achieving those results is shaped by the relationships we build, the support we receive, and the effort others pour into our shared goals.

Practising gratitude brings those aspects into focus, reminding us to recognise the contributions of everyone around us. Studies have shown that gratitude boosts morale, reduces stress, and increases resilience—all traits that benefit leaders and teams alike.

Here are some ways to bring gratitude into our leadership, not only to enhance our own experience but to create a ripple effect that benefits those we lead.

  1. Acknowledge and appreciate often: we can all be guilty of occasionally overlooking moments to express appreciation for our team’s hard work and contributions. When leaders regularly express gratitude, it has a direct impact on morale, productivity, and trust; whether it’s a small act of initiative or a creative solution.
  2. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth: leadership is rarely smooth sailing, and the pressures we face can sometimes cloud our appreciation for the growth that challenges bring. By shifting our perspective, we can view challenges as learning experiences and moments of growth for ourselves and our teams. Embracing a “gratitude for the challenge” mindset helps us approach these moments with resilience, teaching us patience and a renewed sense of purpose.
  3. Encourage a culture of gratitude: gratitude is contagious. When leaders model it, they set a standard that encourages everyone to look for ways to express appreciation. Creating opportunities to celebrate successes, big and small, or beginning meetings with a moment of appreciation can help create a culture where gratitude is part of the team’s value.
  4. Practice self-gratitude: leaders tend to focus on others and can forget to extend gratitude to themselves. Acknowledging your own efforts, reflecting on your achievements, and practising self-compassion are critical to avoiding burnout and maintaining balance. Self-gratitude allows us to recognise our growth, stay motivated, and continue to lead with a full tank.
  5. Reflect on the bigger picture: finally, gratitude helps us connect to the bigger picture of our leadership journey. Taking time to reflect on our purpose as leaders and the positive impact we hope to create can reignite our passion and dedication. Gratitude helps us appreciate the journey as much as the destination, reinforcing our commitment to making a difference.

As we celebrate National Gratitude Month, let’s embrace gratitude as a core part of our leadership journey. By doing so, we become more resilient, empathetic, and inspiring leaders, and create an environment where those around us feel valued and motivated to give their best.
