The start of a new year feels like the right time to reset, not just in our personal lives, but in the way we lead.
After the busyness of the previous months, I notice leaders carrying forward habits and mental clutter that make clarity feel distant. I remember one January, sitting with a senior leader who had spent the previous year constantly reacting. He told me, “I feel like I’m running, but I’m not moving forward.” That conversation reminded me how important it is to start the year by setting a mindset that prioritises presence, focus, and intention.
Step Back Before You Step Forward
Before making plans or setting goals, take a moment to pause. Reflect on what worked well last year, what drained you, and what genuinely mattered. I find it helpful to write down three moments when I felt most engaged or energised in my work. These reflections reveal what I want to carry forward, and what I want to leave behind.
One of my clients shared a similar approach. She took the first week of January to simply observe her leadership habits, noting when she felt most effective and when she felt stretched too thin. By the end of that week, she had a clear picture of where her focus should be and how she wanted to show up for her team.
Align Your Focus with What Truly Matters
Clarity comes from knowing not just what to do, but why it matters. Ask yourself: “What are the leadership priorities that will make the biggest difference for my team this year?” This might be strengthening culture, building capability, or supporting wellbeing. When your focus is aligned with your values, decisions feel more grounded, and you lead with confidence rather than reactivity.
Create Mental Space for the Year Ahead
A clear mindset should be nurtured. Try these small practices:
- Block out short thinking sessions in your calendar to reflect on your leadership focus. Even 15 minutes can help clear mental clutter.
- Take stock of commitments and ask which ones truly require your attention. Saying no to less important tasks makes room for what really matters.
- Keep a small journal of your thoughts and intentions for the year. Writing helps clarify priorities and track progress.
I start each year with a short reflection note to myself, summarising the lessons I want to carry forward. Reading it a few weeks later often reminds me to stay aligned with my intentions even when the pace picks up.
Lead From a Place of Clarity
Leaders who take the start of the year to pause and reflect set the tone for the months ahead and create a foundation for sustained impact and well-being.
