Leadership is demanding at the best of times, but some months (and years) bring more pressure than others. If this is how you’re feeling right now, then this blog is worth a read.
Start With Awareness
The first step in protecting your wellbeing is noticing how the year is affecting you.
It’s easy for leaders to find themselves moving from task to task, rarely pausing, and gradually feeling the weight of it all. Protecting your wellbeing in these periods is essential. The way you show up affects your team, your decisions, and your ability to sustain leadership over the long term.
Are you feeling tense more often, finding it hard to focus, or struggling to switch off at the end of the day? Even small moments of reflection can reveal patterns. I encourage the leaders I work with to keep a brief note of energy highs and lows for a week. Seeing when your energy dips or spikes can help you structure your days more intentionally.
Prioritise What Truly Matters
Busy leaders can fall into the trap of doing everything at once. Not every task requires your full attention, and not every issue needs to be resolved immediately. Take time to identify what really moves the needle for your team and long-term goals. Focusing your energy on these priorities reduces unnecessary stress and creates a clearer sense of direction.
Build Daily Habits That Recharge You
Wellbeing is strengthened by consistent, small daily practices. This can include:
- Short breaks between meetings to reset your mind
- Mindful breathing or a moment of stillness to regain focus
- Physical activity, whether a walk, a gym session, or stretching during the day
- Brief reflection on wins, challenges, and what you’re learning
Small pauses add up, helping you maintain energy and presence throughout the day.
Protect Your Boundaries
Your calendar can easily become a source of stress if boundaries aren’t clear. Consider reviewing meetings, delegating where possible, and protecting time for thinking, planning, and recovery. Saying no to certain demands is key to responsible leadership that protects your wellbeing.
Connect With Support
Leadership can feel isolating, especially in busy periods. Having people to talk to, whether peers, mentors, or a coach, can help you gain perspective and remain grounded. Leadership coaching and consultancy can provide a confidential space to reflect on your wellbeing while staying effective and visible in your role.
Lead by Example
Your approach to wellbeing sets the tone for your team. When you prioritise rest, reflection, and balance, you signal that it is safe and important for others to do the same. A team that sees their leader caring for themselves is more likely to sustain energy, stay engaged, and approach challenges with resilience.
If you would like support in creating strategies that protect your wellbeing while keeping your leadership strong, I offer coaching and consultancy designed to help leaders thrive in busy, complex, and demanding environments. You are welcome to get in touch to explore how we could work together.
