Why Employees Now Expect More from Their Leaders

You are here: Home / Blog / Why Employees Now Expect More from Their Leaders

The workplace has undergone a shift over the last few years. As the dust settles from the pandemic, remote revolutions, and the current economic uncertainty continues, there is a truth that is evident: what employees expect and want from their workplace and leadership has also changed.

Although some employers are trying to claw back some of those changes, such as forcing people back into the office full-time, I think the changes in employee expectations will not go away. Employees have experienced what is possible.

Today’s workforce expects more: more transparency, more purpose, and more support for their growth. In short, employees expect leaders who lead like humans, not job titles.

Transparency is non-negotiable.

Employees want honesty, even when the news isn’t great. Whether it’s company performance, strategy shifts, or internal changes, today’s workforce expects clear, open communication from those at the top.

As a leader, this means you should:

  • Be proactive in sharing updates and decisions.
  • Address uncertainties with candour, not spin.
  • Invite feedback and questions instead of broadcasting polished announcements.

Leading with Purpose Matters

It’s no longer enough to offer a salary and hope that’s motivation enough.  Employees want to feel that their work matters. They want to align with a company mission that resonates with their values, and they want to see that purpose in action, not just on posters.

What leaders can do:

  • Connect the company’s goals to real-world impact.
  • Help each team member understand how their work contributes to the bigger picture.
  • Demonstrate the organisation’s values through decisions, not just slogans.

Career Growth is a Basic Expectation

Employees are increasingly ambitious, curious, and driven to improve, not just for the company’s gain, but for their own. If they’re not growing, they’re going. Professional development is no longer seen as a perk. It is now a requirement for the best candidates and employees. So,

  • Offer regular development conversations, not just annual reviews.
  • Champion learning, mentoring, and coaching.
  • Create clear pathways for advancement, even if they’re lateral.

Psychological Safety and Emotional Intelligence Matter

Toxic cultures and fear-based leadership are being named, called out, and rejected. Employees want to feel safe speaking up, challenging ideas, and being themselves without fear of retribution or dismissal.

  • Cultivate a team culture where diverse opinions are welcomed.
  • Address poor behaviour consistently, no matter the seniority.
  • Practice empathy, especially in high-pressure or high-change environments.

Flexibility is the Future

If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that work doesn’t have to happen between 9 and 5 in an office cubicle. Employees now expect flexibility, whether it’s remote work, compressed hours, or simply more autonomy over how they structure their time. This also offers an inclusive approach for those who have caregiving duties or additional needs.

Remember to:

  • Focus on outcomes, not hours.
  • Be open to experimenting with different working patterns.
  • Trust your team, and give them the tools and boundaries they need to thrive.

Evolving Your Leadership Style

If you’re in a leadership position, now is the time to ask yourself: Am I creating the kind of environment I would want to work in?

The leaders who will thrive in this new era aren’t those who cling to authority, they’re the ones who evolve with authenticity, vulnerability, and a commitment to the people they lead.
