The Power of Choice in Your Career and Personal Life

Have you ever found yourself waiting for the “right time” to make a career move? Or holding back from making a big life decision until you feel completely ready? Many of us fall into the trap of waiting…for permission, for external validation, or for a sign that we’re making the right choice.

But the truth is, one of the most powerful things we own is our ability to choose. Our careers, personal lives, and leadership journeys are shaped not by luck or circumstance alone, but by the decisions we make. The question is: are you making those choices intentionally, or are you letting life happen to you?

It’s easy to believe that our career and life paths are largely dictated by outside forces: our leader or manager, the economy, our upbringing, or even luck. While these factors can play a role, they don’t have the final say. The most successful and fulfilled individuals are those who take ownership of their direction rather than waiting for opportunities to be handed to them. Much of the progress I’ve made in my own life has been down to realising and acting on this one truth.

No one will ever give you full permission to go after what you want. That’s something you have to claim for yourself.

Leadership, both in our careers and personal lives, is about acting despite uncertainty. If you wait for clarity, approval, or confidence to appear before you act, you’ll be waiting forever. Confidence isn’t a prerequisite for making bold choices, it’s a byproduct of taking action. As I always say to my clients, confidence comes from and by doing, whatever it is that you’re afraid to do.

So, if you want to take control of your career and life, you have to stop waiting for someone to hand you opportunities and start creating them.

  1. Stop Asking for Permission: Successful leaders and career changers don’t wait for someone to tell them what’s possible, they decide what’s possible and take steps to make it happen.
  2. Make Intentional Decisions: Being intentional doesn’t mean having all the answers. It means choosing with purpose rather than drifting through life on autopilot. Ask yourself: What do I really want in my career and life? What small decisions can I make today that align with that vision? Where have I been waiting instead of acting?
  3. Take Action Before You Feel Ready: No one feels 100% ready for major life or career shifts. Growth happens when you take the leap despite the fear. Start before you feel qualified, apply before you feel ready, and trust that you’ll learn along the way.

If you feel stuck in your career or personal life, it’s time to take back control.

You don’t need anyone’s permission to create change. The power is already in your hands, you just have to use it.

At the end of the day, your career and life are yours to shape. Will you take control, or will you let life decide for you? The choice is yours.
