Supporting The Efforts of Others

17th February 2020 by Sandra Pollock Leave a Comment

I moved to Leicester 30 years ago and I’ve always said that it was one of the best moves I’ve done.  Considering I’ve moved around and lived in many places, it still seems strange sometimes to think that I’ve stayed in one place for so long.  But to be honest, Leicester has so much going for it.

You might be wondering why I’m in a reflective mood.

I’ve been asked to speak at a women’s event which will be raising funds for a well known  Leicester women’s charity, the Sharma Women’s Centre.  The Sharma Women’s Centre has been going for more than 30 years, and it was this thought that brought to mind how long I’ve been here.

I commend the team at Sharma for having kept their doors opened and provided such sterling support to women in the community areas they have focused on for so many years.

We all know difficult it has been over recent years of austerity and funding cuts that has seen many charities close down.

Providing services from Bereavement Counselling, Childcare to Domestic Abuse Support and training courses, the Sharma Women’s Centre has been a life-support for hundreds of women over the past 30 years.  A great example of women coming together to support other women in need, no matter what they need might be.

It’s an honour to be asked to support their fundraising activities this year by offering my thoughts at this event.

I wish the Sharma Women’s Centre and Yasmin Nathani MBE, Chair, many more years of success serving the women of the city of Leicester.

When women of all community come together to support each other we are much stronger and the world around us benefits.  I look forward to meeting Yasmin and her team.

Along with Yasmin Nathani MBE, and I, the other speaker on the evening will be Jigna Varu, CCO, Microfresh.  Another amazing young woman, who I’m looking forward to hearing from.  She is already one to watch as her career takes flight.
