Not long ago I sat with a senior leader over coffee. She looked tired in that way that sleep can’t fix. We weren’t talking about strategy or team dynamics or performance reviews. We were talking about joy. More specifically, where hers had gone.
Leadership can be a deeply fulfilling path. But somewhere between back-to-back meetings, ongoing demands, and carrying the weight of others, it’s easy to forget what first drew you in. That flicker of purpose. The excitement of shaping something meaningful. The real human connection. Joy doesn’t vanish all at once. It fades away, quietly, as demands increase.
But joy is not a luxury. It is not something to squeeze into weekends or time off. For leaders, it is fuel. It’s what allows you to show up fully, to inspire with energy that others feel without you saying a word.
So how do you begin to reclaim it?
It starts by tuning in, rather than pushing through. Begin with small reflections. When was the last time you felt truly alive at work? What were you doing? Who were you with? What was it about that moment that made it matter?
Most leaders I work with rediscover something surprising. Joy doesn’t come from achieving the next milestone. This can be short-lived. It often comes from being present, in the conversation that wasn’t planned. From mentoring someone who reminds you of a younger version of yourself. From creating space for others to grow. From speaking with honesty and feeling heard.
Joy also returns when values stop being words on a wall and start being lived again. What matters most to you? Not just as a leader, but as a person? Find the gaps between that and how your days are spent. It could be one small shift. Saying no to what doesn’t align. Giving yourself permission to do more of what does.
Reclaiming joy in leadership means accepting that you’re a human being in a leadership role, not a robot who occasionally remembers they have a life. It’s giving yourself time to feel again. Time to notice. Time to connect with what lights you up so you can lead from that place.
If leadership has felt grey or dull lately, that’s not a failure. It’s a signal. A quiet invitation to return to what once felt vivid. And you don’t have to do it all at once. Start small. Start now.
A few gentle ways to start reconnecting with joy in your leadership:
- Reflect on what truly energises you in your role. Build just ten minutes of that into your week to begin with.
- Revisit your core values. Choose one and find a way to live it more consciously this month.
- Say no once this week to something that drains you. Use that space to reconnect with something or someone that matters.
- Take one conversation off Teams or email and make it face-to-face. Notice how you feel afterwards.
- Create a moment of stillness in your day, even just five minutes, to check in with how you’re doing, not just how you’re performing.
You don’t need to wait for a quieter season to reclaim joy. It starts in the moments you choose to lead like yourself again. Reach out if you’d like support.
