Throughout my time as a Leadership and DEI, Executive Business Consultant, I have helped many organisations, micro and macro, navigate the challenging waters of change. Whether that change is related to an organisation’s structure, processes, culture or strategies, the key to successful periods of change lies heavily in leaders’ abilities to guide their teams, while minimising disruption and maximising collaboration.
The word ‘change’ holds connotations of uncertainty and can make people feel unsettled. While change may not always be a good thing, it’s important to understand that change can allow for refreshed processes and better outcomes that benefit all employees.
I’ve seen change have a significantly positive impact on teams that have taken the appropriate steps into consideration, and I want to share some of these with you:
Clarity with the Vision
A clear and compelling vision serves as the North Star for your organisation during times of change. Any organisational, structural or cultural change should be aligned with the organisation’s vision and mission. Make it clear how the change aligns.
Transparent Communication
Create a structure for two-way communications. Be transparent about the reasons for the change, the expected impact, and how it will benefit both the organisation and employees.
This creates a sense of purpose that can inspire and motivate your team.
Inclusive Decision-Making
Involving employees in the decision-making process fosters a sense of ownership and will help reduce resistance. Seek input from different levels across the organisation, encourage feedback, and integrate valuable insights into the change strategy. This inclusivity helps employees feel valued and invested in the transformation.
Adequate Resources
Change may require additional resources, whether it be financial, technological or human. Ensure that your team has the necessary tools, training and support to navigate the change seamlessly, instead of adding on additional workload which can have a detrimental impact. Investment into additional resources demonstrates commitment to the success of the change initiative, and support for the people involved, while allowing for a smoother transition.
Continuous Reflection and Adjustments
Regularly review the progress of the change initiative, monitoring KPIs, and feedback. Be prepared to adjust the strategy, based on these reflections and the evolving circumstances. Flexibility is key.
Remember, organisational change is not just a one-off event. It’s a continuous journey of adaptation and learning. By embracing change and factoring in the steps above, you set the foundation of success for the business.
