As leaders who consistently drive strategies and navigate challenges, it’s all too easy for us to overlook our own mental health and wellbeing.
Yet, this neglect comes at a cost not only to ourselves as leaders but also to the very organisations we lead. Neglecting our mental health can lead to burnout, decreased productivity, strained relationships, and even physical health issues.
As leaders, we often prioritise the welfare of our teams and organisations above our own.
Our ability to lead effectively is tied to our own emotional and mental state. When we neglect our wellbeing, we risk compromising our decision-making abilities, communication skills, and overall leadership effectiveness.
Leaders serve as role models for their teams. By prioritising your own mental health, you set a powerful example for others to follow. By openly acknowledging and addressing your struggles, you create a culture where mental health is destigmatised and prioritised throughout the organisation. A culture where the practise of safe care can be seen as just as important as commercial success.
Organisations where leaders openly practice mental health strategies, tend to experience higher levels of employee engagement, loyalty, and innovation. By investing in leader wellbeing, organisations can create a virtuous cycle where empowered leaders foster thriving teams, leading to sustainable success.
Mental health and wellbeing in the workplace is a topic close to my heart, and I want to encourage you to take some time out to practise self-care rituals for mental clarity, such as journaling, exercising and doing something that you enjoy, as well as seeking support from mentors, a coach or those you trust.
