Leadership, with all its rewards, is not without its challenges.
Among these, managing difficult employees ranks high. These individuals, through their disruptive behaviours, negative attitudes, or inconsistent performance, can test a leader’s patience and skills.
Effectively handling such employees is crucial not only for maintaining team harmony but also for fostering a positive work environment.
Having helped many leaders navigate the challenges of difficult employees over the last three decades, I know that these situations need to be dealt with care and empathy.
While it can be easy to get frustrated, we must pause and firstly empathise on some of the reasons why employees may be causing disruption through their behaviour: empathy can transform challenging situations into opportunities for growth and improvement.
The worst thing a leader can do is mirror the employee’s behaviour as this will only cause the situation to escalate and send a psychological sign that this type of behaviour is acceptable.
Employees can be difficult for various reasons, ranging from personal issues to professional frustrations. As a leader, understanding these underlying causes is crucial for addressing the behaviour effectively and empathetically.
Take this example:
An employee might feel overwhelmed if they are unsure of their responsibilities or how their performance is being evaluated. In turn, this can lead to confusion and frustration, causing an employee to act out or underperform.
Not all employees feel confident enough to speak up so it’s highly important to consider the following, regardless of the situation:
- Show genuine interest in understanding the employee’s perspective by actively listening without interrupting.
- Offer feedback that is specific, actionable, and framed positively.
- Offer flexible solutions that can help the employee manage their personal and professional responsibilities more effectively.
Every situation is different and it’s crucial to ensure you as a leader are getting the support you need to help navigate these challenges.
