Covid: A Missed Opportunity for Longer Term View

You are here: Home / Blog / Covid: A Missed Opportunity for Longer Term View

10th January 2021 by Sandra Pollock Leave a Comment

I’m not a health specialist.  I state this clearly at the start, but I am like all of us looking at the long-term impact of this Covid pandemic we find ourselves in.

I’m glad there are so many scientists and pharma organisations working to find a cure to Covid-19 and its mutations.  It will be great when we can all go out in the open with ease and hug each other.

However, in addition to the work being done by scientists across the world, there are other things we should also be looking at, and here are a few of my ideas on this point.

Raising Awareness of healthier choices

There have been much research and case studies from hospitals dealing with the pandemic in other countries, that prove that there are other ways that we can naturally strengthen our immune system against this common enemy.  The sharing of some of this research more openly and publicly by the government and health services, showing the facts and figures honestly, would reduce some of the panic.

Yes, I’m sure there would be people that would, on hearing this information, choose not to take the vaccine and prefer to try the more natural course, but if it works, and data and evidence proves that it has, wouldn’t that be worth it?

Some might also say that doing this would also help to maintain our democratic right of choice.

As human beings, choice is important to us and as history has shown on so many occasions, whenever there is a threat to choice, people will fight to maintain choice, even to the detriment of their life.

I’m also sure that there will be those people who would do both, take the vaccine and change their diet so that there are doing all that they can to safeguard themselves and others.

Taking a longer-term view

  1. Our recent global history would appear to indicate that we can expect similar virus outbreaks in the future. It makes sense therefore to look at finding easier and more natural ways to prepare ourselves long before an outbreak happens.

There have been numerous studies that prove that eating more healthily, and in particular, ensuring that we consume certain vitamins and other nutrients has been proven to strengthen our immune system and enable our bodies to resist the virus. Those vitamins frequently listed as being helpful can be easily found in foods, and if required, in supplements.

A public awareness programme that provides this information, as mentioned above would be a powerful approach that has the likelihood of reducing the long-term cost of health care and pressure on the NHS.

Maybe we need the government to become a little braver and in addition to providing the vaccine support now, to consider preparing the population for any possible similar future viral attack through natural sources.  How about putting money into raising this kind of awareness now that people are more open to consider how to keep themselves healthy?

  1. Another idea for consideration is how we continue to spend the billions that we will at some time in the near future, have to repay. How about putting some of this money into enabling those economically challenged communities, to purchase healthier foods more easily.

One brave idea would be to look at making healthier foods less expensive, and less healthy food, like those that are highly manufactured and contain less nutritional value, more expensive.

People suffering from poverty are much more susceptible to viruses and other illnesses because it can be easier to buy unhealthy food because it is cheaper.  Unfortunately, it is the poorer communities that have been hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

  1. Funding the natural

How about funding vitamins such as Vitamin D3 and Vitamin C, for example, along with other nutrients, that have been proven to strengthen the body’s immune system and fight the Covid virus? Would that be too radical?

Helping our wider population by raising awareness of how natural methods can help now and on a longer-term basis will help change both our awareness, and for many, our habits. I can’t think of a better time when this idea would be more effective: at a time when we all want to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. This would be money well spent even if it was done for a six month or so period to get our immune system strengthened.

What I’d like to see us trying to do is to think ahead and be brave enough to act in a way that will begin to set us up now for a better future for everyone, not just the chosen few. Using the natural food option would support farmers and all other industries that depend on them.  There would be a wider ripple effect of both the information shared and the money used.

I am currently a tutor on the PCC’s Community Leadership Programme here in Leicester.  Last week I took a session on Vision, Mission, and Strategy.  This has made me wonder what future the governing powers of our country see.  What is their vision of our country where our health and wellbeing are concerned? Are they just looking to find a plaster for today’s sore?

Nature has everything that we need to heal and repair the human body and its systems.  But yes, there are definitely times when we need to use science to speed up the healing process.

What I’m looking at is taking a dual approach that deals with the issue at hand, but also deals with creating a healthier natural path for ongoing natural ways.  I’m also interested in us being open and honest about this so that the quick fix is not always seen as the only option.

Ensuring higher standards of health can only be done with a longer-term plan of making people aware of the power they hold through choices that they can make on a daily basis.  And more importantly, giving them the truth about the natural options they have to resist viruses through the food choices available to them.

I hold on to the hope and the vision that we will have leaders that are brave enough to lead-based on what’s right for the people they serve and are prepared to try the simple, the honest, and the true.

I hope it is clear that I am not by any means advocating that anyone shouldn’t take the vaccine.  It is a choice at this current time. What I am advocating is that we take a less short-sighted view of dealing with viruses and the longer-term health of our population.
