If you’re reading this from the UK you will know that here we celebrate Black History Month (BHM) in October. For me, this is usually quite a busy time. I am fortunate enough to be invited to speak at a number of events and attend many others. This year has been as busy as usual.
The theme for this year’s BHM is Time for Change: Action not words. So on many of the occasions, I was invited to speak I used this as the foundation of my address. I happen to agree with this theme. I’m also pleased to note that this agreement seems to have been taken up by many people from all walks of life, business, and culture on behalf of Black and Brown people. I hope that this will bring about the change and progression we seek.
Gina Samuel-Richards
Gina is a solicitor and co-founder of AGR Law. She is the first female of African descent and Muslim to be appointed to this position in the society’s 162 years. We wish Gina a very successful year.
Black Community’s Contribution to the British Legal System
On the 26th October 2022, Gina ran her inaugural event. Black History Month – A look at the Black Community’s Contribution to the British Legal System. The event showcased a series of banners depicting the work of a selection of people from the Commonwealth and their contributions to the development of UK law.
Gina’s speech charged a journey of the existence of Black people in the UK from 200-250 AD i.e. the remains found of the “Ivory Bangle Lady” to current-day individuals such as Baroness Patricia Scotland was the first Black woman to be appointed Deputy High Court Judge, Recorder, and Master of Middle Temple.
