The landscape of leadership has changed, but one challenge that persists is the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions. As a female leadership coach, I believe it is crucial for organisations to actively support and empower women, not only to achieve gender equity but to harness the diverse perspectives that female leaders bring to the table.
As we approach International Equal Pay Day on September 18th, a day dedicated to raising awareness about gender pay gaps, now is the perfect time to reflect on how we can empower women in leadership and create environments that encourage their growth.
What Does Empowerment in Leadership Mean?
Empowering women in leadership is about fostering a space where their voices are heard, respected, and valued. Empowerment is about providing access to opportunities, mentorship, and the ability to grow without being hindered by bias or structural barriers.
When we empower women, we enable them to bring their unique strengths, perspectives, and leadership styles to their roles. This, in turn, fuels innovation, enhances decision-making, and strengthens organisations.
How Leaders Can Support Women on Their Leadership Journey
- Mentorship and sponsorship: Leaders, both male and female, have a vital role in mentoring and sponsoring women within their organisations. Mentorship offers women guidance, while sponsorship ensures they are visible for key opportunities. By actively mentoring women, leaders can help them navigate challenges, develop confidence, and grow into roles where they can make meaningful contributions. Read more about mentorship and sponsorship in my previous blog.
- Championing equal pay: International Equal Pay Day reminds us of the ongoing disparities in wages between men and women. Leaders can support women by advocating for transparent pay structures and ensuring equitable compensation for equal work. Organisations that prioritise pay equity not only support their female employees but also build a more loyal and engaged workforce.
- Creating an inclusive culture: Inclusive work cultures are critical for empowering women. Leaders can set the tone by promoting policies that support work-life balance, offering flexible working arrangements, and addressing unconscious bias in hiring and promotions. Creating safe spaces where women feel supported to share their ideas without fear of judgement or backlash is essential to fostering empowerment.
- Provide leadership development opportunities: Investing in the professional development of female employees is key to their growth. Leaders should ensure that women have access to leadership training, executive coaching, and other developmental resources. Encouraging women to take on challenging projects or roles where they can demonstrate their leadership potential is another important way to support their advancement.
With the above in mind, I want to express my gratitude and thanks for all the support received towards the upcoming Women’s Awards.
I set up the Women’s Awards to raise awareness, recognise and honour the hard work and valuable contribution women of all cultures, communities, races, and beliefs, in all sectors make.
2024 is our 8th year as we continue to grow and I am so proud of how far we’ve come as a community.
Become part of the movement to help women see their worth and join us on 27th September at the Gala Celebration, Dinner, and Presentation.
