Overcoming Imposter Syndrome as a Leader

You are here: Home / Blog / Overcoming Imposter Syndrome as a Leader

30th April 2024 by Sandra Pollock Leave a Comment

Imposter syndrome is a common challenge faced by many leaders, regardless of their level of experience or success.

It’s that nagging feeling of self-doubt and the fear of being exposed as a fraud, despite evidence of competence and accomplishments and often stems from a discrepancy between perceived competence and actual abilities.

Even the most accomplished leaders may feel like they don’t deserve their success or worry that others will discover their perceived shortcomings.

If you’re currently experiencing imposter syndrome, I want you to ask yourself this one question:

How might your perspective on your abilities and achievements change if you view yourself through the lens of someone who believes in your potential as much as you believe in theirs?

Bring someone to mind who supports and believes in you. What would they say to you? Think about this for a moment.

What is the value of addressing your perception of yourself i.e. the doubts about your competence and abilities?

Here are a few reasons why you need to work on improving your self-belief and dealing with imposter syndrome.

  1. Reduce your stress and anxiety levels and improve your wellbeing. Constantly working and living with a sense of fear is not good for our mental or physical health. The continually high levels of adrenaline and cortisol in our bodies over extended periods cause high blood pressure which is damaging to our health and well-being.
  2. Improve your performance. Believing that we are not good or not good enough can become a self-fulfilling prophecy which can ultimately affect our performance.
  1. Improve your creativity. When we can learn how to relax, during times of stress or difficulty, we enable ourselves to become more open to creative and innovative ideas which in turn will boost our success and confidence.

It is entirely possible to learn the skills and techniques to manage your self-doubt, improve your confidence and develop greater resilience.  Don’t let imposter syndrome dictate your success or happiness.

One-on-one, personalised coaching is an effective way to set actionable goals and navigate the challenges that arise through imposter syndrome.

Reach out to me today and we can work together to unleash your potential and ultimately help you thrive in your personal and professional life.
